Squarespace Website Copy Mistakes That Turn Visitors Away

Your Squarespace site might be beautifully designed, but if your copy isn’t pulling its weight, your dream clients are bouncing — fast. Strong design brings them in, but your words are what invite them to stay, explore, and ultimately, take action.

Here are some of the most common website copy mistakes I see as a web designer, and exactly how to fix them on your Squarespace site.

1. Vague Headlines That Don’t Speak to the Reader

Your headline is the first thing visitors read — and often, the last if it doesn’t land. If your hero banner says “Welcome to my website” or “Creative solutions for all your needs,” you’re missing the chance to hook. Capisce?

Fix it: Write clear, specific headlines that speak directly to your ideal client. What do you offer, and what transformation do you create? A good formula to use, along with an AI prompt can help you here:

[Who you help] + [What you help them do] + [Result they want]

AI needs to understand you better to help

General Prompts

  • "Generate 10 headlines for a new online course about sustainable living."

  • "Give me headline options for a B2B SaaS product that helps companies manage their social media."

  • "I need catchy headlines for an e-commerce store selling handcrafted jewelry."

More Specific Prompts

  • "I'm looking for benefit-driven headlines for my financial planning service targeting young professionals. They're worried about student loan debt and saving for a down payment. I want the headlines to convey a sense of security and future prosperity. The goal is for them to schedule a free consultation."

  • "Provide 5 question-based headlines for my online fitness coaching program aimed at busy moms. They often struggle with finding time to exercise and staying motivated. The tone should be empathetic and empowering. We want them to sign up for a 7-day free trial."

2. Writing for Everyone Instead of Your Ideal Client

Trying to appeal to everyone waters down your message. Your copy should feel like a personal note to one person — your dream client.

Fix it: Get laser-focused on who you’re writing for. Use language they would use. Speak to their pain points and goals. Instead of saying “I help businesses grow,” try “I help wellness coaches book dream clients through high-converting Squarespace websites.”

It’s ok to make mistakes and change as you go.

It’s better to analyze your data and make changes as you grow in your brand. Over time, messaging can become stale, and testing your section’s copy and seeing what works will help you move the needle.

3. Missing or Weak Calls to Action (CTAs)

You might have the most beautifully written homepage in the world, but if you don’t guide people on what to do next, they’ll leave.

Fix it: Add strong, clear CTAs throughout your site. Tell visitors what to do: “Book your free consult,” “Browse templates,” “Start your brand refresh.” Squarespace makes it easy to add buttons or link sections that direct traffic where it matters most.

4. Text-Heavy Pages With No Breaks

A wall of text = instant overwhelm. Your content might be valuable, but if it’s not scannable, it’s not being read.

Fix it: Break up long sections using short paragraphs, headlines, subheadings, and visuals. Use Squarespace’s built-in layout blocks to keep things clean and dynamic. Make space for your message to breathe.

5. Overusing Jargon and Industry Buzzwords

If you’re using technical terms or trendy jargon, you risk confusing your reader or sounding generic.

Fix it: Use plain language. Speak like a human. Don’t say, “Leverage omnichannel strategies to maximize ROI.” Say, “I’ll help you build a website that turns visits into sales.” Simple is memorable.

A friendly reminder to you and me:

AI tends to create these jargon-y words. They sound lovely, right, and they make us feel smart when we type them out. This is a reminder to all of us to just KISS. (Keep It Simple Stupid)

…Am I the only millennial who remembers that saying?

Final Thoughts: Write Like You Talk, Edit Like a Pro

Good copy isn’t about sounding fancy — it’s about connection. The best Squarespace sites combine great design with words that feel authentic and intentional. Your voice matters, and your message needs to shine through just as clearly as your visuals.
