1. Use Squarespace’s Built-In SEO Tools Strategically
Did you know that Squarespace comes equipped with SEO settings, but most users don’t go beyond page titles and meta descriptions? Yep, it’s true. Also, if you pay for the Core subscription, you get analytics that are connected to your Google Search Console. Get familiar with:
Custom URLs: Shorten your URLs and include a primary keyword.
Image SEO: Add descriptive alt text with keywords (Don’t slack on this)
Site Title & Tagline: This still matters. Include what you do and for whom.
🛠 Squarespace Tip: Head to any Page > Settings (the gear wheel ⚙ > SEO and make sure each page has a unique meta description tailored for search.
Some Tips on SEO Meta Descriptions:
You may read different advice, but historically, meta descriptions were often recommended to be around 155-160 characters. However, Google has been observed to display longer snippets in search results, sometimes up to 320 characters.
As we know now, Google generally doesn't have a strict "character limit" for meta descriptions. Still, it's more accurate to use a display limit based on pixels, which can vary depending on the device (desktop vs. mobile) and the specific search query.
It's important to note a few things:
Google dynamically generates snippets: While you provide a meta description, Google might choose to pull other relevant text from your page content if it believes it's a better fit for the user's query. This is annoying because we spend a lot of time trying to get our paragraphs in the sweet spot, only for Google to pull elsewhere.
Pixel width matters: The actual number of characters that display depends on the width of the characters themselves (some characters are wider than others) and the screen size.
Focus on quality and relevance: Instead of strictly aiming for a character count, focus on writing a concise, compelling, and relevant summary of your page's content that encourages clicks. Include your main keywords naturally. I would personally try to find a happy medium between quality and character count, if possible.
So, while you might see snippets up to 320 characters, a good best practice is still to make sure your most important information and calls to action are within the first 155-160 characters to ensure they are almost always visible. You can write longer descriptions if it helps convey more information, but be aware that Google might truncate them.
Capisce? Okay, moving on.

2. Target Long-Tail Keywords Based on Client Intent
In a saturated digital space, going after “web designer” isn’t helpful. But “Squarespace brand designer for wellness coaches” hits the mark.
Use UberSuggest, Google’s People Also Ask, and Pinterest Trends to find terms your clients are actually typing.
Think in terms of pain points: “How do I build a Squarespace website that converts?” or “SEO tips for consultants.”
Tip: Add these long-tail keywords naturally in headings, intro paragraphs, and alt text.
3. Optimize Mobile Experience Beyond Just “Responsive”
In 2025, mobile-first indexing is a given, but the bar has been raised.
Make sure buttons are thumb-friendly.
Avoid popups that block content.
Don’t overload animations; it slows load time.
Resize those images, and keep the size <200kb.
Squarespace Tip: Use Mobile View in Site Styles and test frequently on real devices. Fast, clear mobile layouts = better rankings.
4. Leverage AI-Powered SEO Assistants and Integrations
WordPress folks are using tools like RankMath, NeuronWriter, or even ChatGPT SEO prompts to draft meta descriptions, headings, and alt text at scale. Squarespace users can still use platforms like NeuronWriter even if it doesn’t integrate with the platform, but rather with Google Search Console or Zapier. You can also use SEOSpace, which is specifically for Squarespace users.
You can also use Squarespace’s new AI Content Block to generate optimized text.
🚀 Pro Tip: Run all AI-generated content through Grammarly or Hemingway to humanize the voice.
5. Create High-Quality Blog Content with Semantic Structure
Google wants meaningful content with clarity. To help your Squarespace blog rank:
Use clear H1, H2, and H3 hierarchy
Add FAQ sections with schema (Check this video by Christy Price on how to add code for your FAQ section.) Here’s the link to the FAQPage JSON-LD Schema Generator
Use bullet points, bolded keywords, and internal links
Example: A post on “Website Strategy for Coaches” might include a checklist, relevant internal blog links, and optimized images.
6. Build Backlinks Through Strategic Partnerships
You don’t need to do shady SEO. Focus on:
Guest posting on aligned sites (Hi, I’m up for grabs if anyone is reading this 👋)
Collaborating on joint content or webinars (Again, here if you’re interested 👌)
Getting listed in local or niche directories (e.g., wellness collectives, Squarespace designer directories)
🔗 Strong backlinks signal to Google that your site is trustworthy. I’ve only started blogging this past year (2024/2025), and one of my goals is to focus on backlinks and partnerships in the coming year.
7. Track & Refine with Google Search Console and GA4
I’ve used Gemini to help with this tip specifically, as this is newer territory for me, applying this to my website. What I do know is that the real SEO magic happens post-publish.
Use Search Console to find underperforming keywords and pages with high impressions but low CTR.
Use GA4 to track how users move through your site and where they drop off.
Review these monthly to improve headlines, blog titles, and user flow.
As I continue to learn Search Console, GA4 and how to navigate between the two and my Squarespace analytics, I’ll note my findings and create a blog post about this in the future, so stay tuned
